Back in my corporate day’s I completely allowed my work life to take over.  Responding to emails on the laptop from home late at night, finishing up tasks so that I could focus on something else the next day, even taking my work mobile on holiday and answering calls from my team and bosses to deal with issues and queries when I was out of the office.

It’s no wonder I was well on the way to burnout!

Feeling exhausted, stressed and never able to switch off I had let work compromise my health.

It was time to reset the boundaries.

If you’re stuck in this place right now, I encourage you to follow my 3 step process to remembering what’s important to you and refreshing yourself with your personal boundaries – the rules and guidelines you set for yourself and others about what is acceptable behaviour and what isn’t.

Grab a piece of paper and write out three columns

  1. In the first column, write out your values.  These are all the things that are important to you in your life; it might be time with family, wellbeing, exercise etc.  Make a list of all these special values that are non-negotiable in changing in your life.
  2. In the second column next to your value, write out what you need for this value to be active in your life.  For example; if time with family is important you might say that weekend time to focus on doing things together is needed.  Or if you’re wellbeing is important it might be rest, rejuvenate, get creative is what you need to make this value active.
  3. In the final column, this is your boundary. The action you need to take to make this happen.  Write out how you will honour this.  Again, looking at the example we had for time with family it might be informing work colleagues that you’re not available on the weekend and that you turn off your phone to avoid being distracted.  The other example for wellbeing might be to make a commitment for one hour a week, purely for your wellbeing work.

Now, it’s your turn!  How are you going to turn this insight into action?
